Handycam not recognised on PC

I have a DCR 200E that I'm trying to connect to a PC running XP. The device isn't recognised. I bought the product second-hand and it didn't come with any installation software - is that the problem? And if so, how do I get the software?

Hello maxcooter - Welcome to the Sony Forums

I have taken a look on the official support page for this camcorder and the only thing that can be downloaded is a copy of the user manual (it is here in case you would like a copy). It seems that the only possible way to get hold of the driver files and the installation software would be to contact Sony directly (there may be a charge for a new disc) or try and pick up a copy second hand from somewhere like eBay.

Having said all of this, fortunately your camcorder records onto DVD so there is another solution. If you finalise the DVD in the camera when you have finished filming - it should be readable when you insert it into your computer (hopefully the mini disc will fit nicely into the groove in the disc tray when you open your DVD drive). You can then use free software such as Windows Live Movie Maker to import this and begin editing (or indeed any other video editing package that you wish to use).

Thanks,

Simon

Simon,  Thanks for your answer. Unfortunately, using DVDs is not an option as my PC doesn't recognise the discs either - I've tried both kinds and get the same "Please insert disk" message. I do think I need the drivers from somewhere, hope Sony can help

Hello again

In theory, a disc that has definitely been 'finalised' should work in other devices - can you view them on a regular DVD player connected to a TV?

If you decide to speak to customer services at Sony instead to try and obtain an original CD, their contact details can be found in this forum thread:

Let me know how you get on,
