Z5 compact error occurred during tethering
So i recently bought a z5 compact (unlocked) after i finally managed to destroy my z3 compact. My phone will not tether and it's driving me crazy. Every time i try, either the normal wifi hotspot, bluetooth or usb tethering, it says that everything's connected but then says "error occurred during tethering" and won't actually connect.
Troubleshooting:
I was using the same virgin mobile sim (post paid, used in the z3 compact and temporary Xperia SP with no issues), and i work at virgin mobile so i am absolutely sure my apn settings are correct and that the setting is on in my account.
I went to Telstra where i bought the phone and they replaced it under warranty - it still doesn't work.
Im currently visiting the us and I'm using a prepaid lyca mobile sim with 10gb including tethering.
I can only conclude its something to do with Android or the Sony software. If anyone can suggest a way to fix this id really appreciate it as i desperately need tethering while I'm in the US. Thank you!

OMFG. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR POSTING HOW YOU SOLVED THE PROBLEM!!!
This has been p!$$ing me off ever since I got the phone on release day. Sony were useless and could only tell me to reset my phone (their back up is really crap too) or to send in the phone for repair. I called the carrier and spoke to them for ages about settings. They got me to change APN settings but did not mention the APN type. I was mad and kept trying to research a solution and stumbled across your post and I am so thankful I did. Was about ready to chuck out the phone and swear off Sonys.
So FYI to others suffering from this problem, I am with Optus and changing APN type to "dun" worked a treat after months of suffering and swearing.
A MILLION THANK YOUS to you, benno2005

This was a massive help, although, it did cause a different problem. I then could not use mobile data from the phone when tethering was turned off.
What I did was changed the APN type to "default, supl, dun". ie just added the "dun" on the end. this gave me internet acces through both tethering and regular mobile data.
Thanks for post. would not have worked that out otherwise.
