Hi guys,
So i recently bought a z5 compact (unlocked) after i finally managed to destroy my z3 compact. My phone will not tether and it's driving me crazy. Every time i try, either the normal wifi hotspot, bluetooth or usb tethering, it says that everything's connected but then says "error occurred during tethering" and won't actually connect.
Troubleshooting:
I was using the same virgin mobile sim (post paid, used in the z3 compact and temporary Xperia SP with no issues), and i work at virgin mobile so i am absolutely sure my apn settings are correct and that the setting is on in my account.
I went to Telstra where i bought the phone and they replaced it under warranty - it still doesn't work.
Im currently visiting the us and I'm using a prepaid lyca mobile sim with 10gb including tethering.
I can only conclude its something to do with Android or the Sony software. If anyone can suggest a way to fix this id really appreciate it as i desperately need tethering while I'm in the US. Thank you!
What are the tether settings currently set to?
I got my phone from Telstra aswell and it tethered before and after I flashed the ROM, I briefly tested everything 5minutes into turning it on with Telstra's default stuff, and then I flashed it, then I put the Generic ROM on.
Make sure that the bluetooth and wifi tethering are not on at the same time, else you will get the error message.
Then just connect to one or the other.
If you use BT, don't enable WiFi hotspot, it will create it's own once you plug the USB cable in, and if you use the WiFi hotspot, don't worry about turning bluetooth on.
I just edited my main post, hangon, I'll take a screenie aswell... brb

Go to Settings>More>Tethering & portable hotspot
What are those settings set to?
Turn WiFi and Bluetooth off,
THen in the ther & portable hotspot menu,
goto 'Portable WiFi Hotspot settings'
Set up your own SSID and password, turn security on to WPA2PSK, make a password that's 8 or 13 characters long.
Turn WPS Push button off.
Grab the top of your screen, and slide down the menu so you get the quick settings, and edit the options you have available, i can't take screenshots of these. It's that menu you get when you swipe down from the top of your screen. It should show the carrier, date, time, battery and have a little pencil icon,
If you don't have 'Hotspot' as a shortcut, click on the pencil Icon... then scroll through the different shortcuts, until you find Hotspot.
Enable that for the quick settings tray.
Once you do that, go back to the portable hotspot menu.
and check to see if the Portable Wifi hotspot has been activated.
You should know automatically because your status bar at the top should turn blue, with a Wifi icon in a white square should pop up (my bar has been blue the whole time because i'm plugged in via usb to transfer the screenshots)
If your bar doesn't turn blue, the phone hasn't set up the SSID correctly. If it has turned blue, it's time we get on your laptop and search for it.
Yep that's been done several times, it just won't work. It keeps coming up with "Error occured during tethering". Crazy frustrating.
All done unfortunately turning it on is not the problem, the icon appears and everything is "working" except the actual internet
