Ok, so no luck finding actual sollution as yet...but in the meantime have found some work-arounds that, so far, seem to be better then 'glove mode' option (as with glove mode on, the screen becomes super sensitive and can be frustrating when checking through photo's, etc)
1 :: Replace Home / Navigation buttons with " Soft Keys - Home Back Button"
if you change the settings to have...
* the Buttons at Bottom
* Back Button on Left
...then it's pretty much same/similar to the standard Sony navigation buttons and you can choose the button style / button size / transparency settings to your liking 😉
2 :: Install GMD Full Screen Immersive Mode
>> https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gmd.immersive&hl=en
Can change the settings in here to remove the original navigation buttons at the bottom, which then places the newly created nav buttons at the very bottom, where the original buttons usually sit.
FYI - you'll need to adjust the size of the buttons in " Soft Keys - Home Back Button" app to find a balance where they are big enough for your liking...but not too big, so they don't get pushed accidently when your typing a text message or any other app that uses that bottom section of the screen.
3 :: Drop Down Status Bar app to access all those bits at the top
>> https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wq.dropdownstatusbar&hl=en
(you'll need to make a space on your home screen to place the app button when you prefer)
Took me a little bit of time to play around with the settings between each app to make all happiness, but think I'm now sorted to be able to do all as before, without Glove Mode on
nooice!!!
Would be interested if anyone has found better joy using any other similar 'work-around-apps' to solve these missing functionalities...??...
Hoping Sony wakes up sometime to get the original functions sorted...!!!...!!!...but for now, i'm happy with this backup setup ^_^

@I've the same problem, thanks @DalaWala for the simple workaround.
I found via "adb logcat" that these errors arise when Home, Back or recent are pressed:
08-19 11:30:00.320 3187 3187 V DeadZone: consuming errant click: (179.0,8.0)
08-19 11:30:02.030 3187 3187 V DeadZone: consuming errant click: (383.0,12.0)
08-19 11:30:03.334 3187 3187 V DeadZone: consuming errant click: (570.0,9.0)
Some other info here.
PLEASE SONY FIX IT!
As a temporary workaroung (of permanent workaround, if you're not covered by warranty), is to connect the phone via adb, and put this command:
adb shell wm overscan 0,0,0,20
which cuts the screen 20dpi from the bottom. This solved for me, even if I have 20 pixels that cannot be used at the bottom.
aah, that sounds like an interesting workaround to test
what is ' adb ' ??
does this solve the dropdown menu to work too? ...or would that text line need to be editted to include trimming 20pixels from the top of the screen ??
adb is the standard interface to connect via command line to the phone, in Debug mode.
Please check https://developer.android.com/studio/releases/platform-tools.html
Prior to connect the phone, you'll need to have the proper drivers from Sony:
https://developer.sonymobile.com/downloads/drivers/
I cannot say anything on the top dropdown menu, I did not have that problem, but you can try with:
adb shell wm overscan 0,20,0,0
the general sintax for the command is
adb shell wm overscan [LEFT,TOP,RIGHT,BOTTOM]
to revert anyn modifications made, type:
adb shell wm overscan reset
I gained the same issue yesterday afternoon. No updates were run or apps installed.
I've had to install softkeys home bar to get around it.
Such a pain.
Thanks for the tips.
My home and back buttons just 'died' few days ago.
I really needed a workaround.
Surprisingly tasks button on the right still works fine.
I use a Xperia Z3 compact for more than 2 years now. It has been great.
Few weeks ago i experienced failures droping down the status bar. In the beginning, a small part was still responsive but not anymore. I'm now using Drop Down Status Bar app for this issue.
Glove mode didnt help.
For what i have read elsewhere it really sounds like a hardware problem. Sensors at the top and bottom of screen. Sony probably is aware of that.
I have tried preety much everything. Reset the phone, software reapir... nothing helps. Tried to use it on glove mode and multitasking button works but then it's a nightmare to use the phone like that. Really Sony??? I have bought this phone 18 months ago and it's already useless. It is surely a software problem with tons of people complaining and you do nothing? Right now the only way I can use this phone is with the Easy Touch app installed.
Horrible.
Will buy another phone before changing the screen at my own expenses. Not a Sony one though....
Disappointed!
To complete my previous post, some sources to related issues.
Quotes : "...I brought the device to a Sony repair center.
They confirm it was a hardware issue and they change all the screen set (screen + touch)."

/t5/Xperia-Z3/Cannot-pull-down-status-bar/td-p/1017539/page/16
To confirm it's not a software problem, i just remotely control the device (e.g. with Teamviewer) and it works perfectly (drop-down menu, back button, home button).
I'm done. I just ordered a new phone. A Korean one.
Same issue, this device gave me too many problems :(((
