Vaio incompatibility with USB wireless adapter?

Hi, I'm using a two year old Vaio VPCEA1S1E with Windows 7. The internal wireless adapter on this is 150mbps, but since my router supposedly goes up to 300mbps I decided to get a 300mbps USB wireless adapter to see if it made any difference. It did! In fact I’ve now tried two different brands (TP Link/RealTek) and when they work both do make a significant difference to browsing/download speeds.

The problem is that they seem to be causing an instability so that the laptop regularly freezes, most often during start up or sometimes soon after. I did disable the internal adapter and did install the latest drivers for both the USB adapters. Both seem to work fine with my other laptop, but they freeze the Vaio (which works fine, if slower, when I revert to the internal adapter). Obviously it would be nice to keep the extra speed so if anyone has any tips on how I might fix this I'd very grateful.
