Unable to update 9300m video driver on z21wn/b

Hi there,

I've been trying to update the driver for the NVIDIA GeForce 9300M GS in my new VGN-Z21WN laptop since the one that comes installed is nearly a year old! However, when I download the new drivers from NVidia and run the installer (GeForce Release 185 for Notebooks BETA, http://www.nvidia.com/object/geforce_notebook_winvista_185.81_beta.html ) it either says that no relevant hardware is installed on the computer or that the computer is not running 32bit windows vista! What's going on? Has Sony made some sort of modifications to the drivers in this laptop model due to the dual graphics setup? Any help would be appreciated!

Hi Phillip and welcome to Club Vaio.

Sony customise the drivers for use on Vaios and prevent commercially available drivers from being installed.

Unless you are having some significant problem, I would stick with the Sony driver until they release an update because the video driver is designed to work with the Sony Utilities and you may get some surprises if you update to a generic notebook nVidia driver.

However, if you are having problems and wish to try an updated driver this is possible if the installation information file (.INF) is modified to allow the driver to install.

Have a look here and go to the right-hand column and click on Quickstart Guide in the Frequent Questions box.

Yes, probably best.

I see I did not attach the link to the driver updates.

Have a read of the Quickstart Guide: -
