Sony VAIO VGN-CR13G Upgrade Question

Hi, I have a VGN-CR13G and I was wondering if it can support any of the following mobile processors:

Core 2 Quad Q9000

Core 2 Quad Q9100

Core 2 Quad Q9200

Core 2 Extreme QX9300

It is the Australian model of the Laptop (As I am Australian), I asking here because there appears to be no Australian forum and if there is, it is very well hidden. And the fact I can't seem to get an answer (So far) from their support either.

I'll post the specifications I have upgraded it a bit:

3GB of DDR2 @ 800MHz (Origionaly 2GB of DDR2 at 667MHz or 800MHz, I never checked the speed so I don't know it's inital speed)

2GHz core 2 duo (It was some 1.8GHz Core 2 Duo model origionally)

Thanks in advance!

Hi laptoplinux and welcome to the Sony Europe Community forums.

Your model was originally fitted with a Core 2 Duo T7100 1.8GHz processor.  This fits into the 478-pin 'Socket P' so any upgrades will neeed to be compatible with this socket.

There are several options.  From your list, the Core 2 Quad Q9100 2.26GHz and the Core 2 Extreme QX9300 2.53GHz will fit but the TDP for these two is 45 watts which may give you an overheating problem.

A 'cooler' option is the Core 2 Duo T9900 3.06GHz. which has a TDP of 35 watts which is the same as the original T7100.

However, I am not convinced this upgrade is worth the cost.

Hi, thankyou for the information about the processors.

How much extra heat will be created by a CPU of 45 watts compared to my current specs:

The CPU is a Core 2 Duo T5750 with a TDP of 35Watts

Idle:

Core 0: 30-35 Celsius

Core 1: 30-35 Celsius (Without fail, for some reason this core is always 3-5 celsius hotter than Core 0)

???: (I assume this device is the GPU) 43 Celsius (Always 5-10 celsius hotter, which is odd, because I changed the thermal paste recently)

Load:

Core 1 & 0: 60-68 Celsius

GPU?: 73 Celsius

Under load without a cooling stand the load temps are 10 celsius hotter.

Some other things I should mention is because I am a tad bit short of money, I am unable to afford a new machine with the specifications I require, and I am possibly getting one of someone I know. Also, I am able to underclock the cores with a tool I know of (I have used it before, I think it changes the FSB or something), would this help bring down the heat much, and would adding a small sheet of copper to the cooling system help as well??
