Possible to boot from USB HDD

Hey, after recently finding out you can't boot from a USB flash/pen drive, ive decided to buy a 60GB hdd to install linux on.

Does the BIOS support booting from this device.
Thanks

 I'm seriously starting to detest Sony now, I might sell this laptop for an Acer.

Is it possible to upgrade the HDD inside the laptop?

thanks

As far as I am aware the only bootable USB device that the Vaio BIOS supports is the Sony USB floppy drive and I am not certain that this applies to all models.

Yes, that should be no problem.

Do you mean if I have a floppy drive, as no I don't.
Any other solutions to this as I really want to install and run linux of an external hd

yes, that should be no problem

Will this void my warranty if I buy and do this myself

Thanks

As I understand, yes it will. However, as long as you retain the original drive it can always be refitted if the dreaded return to Sony ever becomes necessary.
