I have just bought a VAIO desktop VGC-JS2E with the promise of Draft N connectivity. This is good as I havea BT Home Hub 2 which works with N.
However, I can only get my wireless connection to connect at G speed (54bits). The manual says go to the Vaio Control Centre / network connections /VAIO smart network. Then in advanced for WLAN select 2.4 AND 5.00ghz from the pulldown under Mode. However I only show 2.4ghz or wlan off.
I don't seem to have the option to increase and I'm not even sure if this would improve my connection. Be glad of any advice from anyone?
I don't think you are at all unusual.
802.11n is still a draft configuration and the theoretical speeds are hardly ever achieved.
Don't worry about the 5.0GHz setting, this is only applicable for the USA and all a, b, g,& Draft N use 2.4Ghz in Europe. The speed is dictated by the wireless drivers.
All you can do is to look for an updated driver for your wireless card (I'm not sure if you have the Intel card or the Atheros card in your model) this may help you get more than 54Mbit/s.
Unless you are transferring large files across the network it is not very important because your internet speed will be only a fraction of the 54 Mbit/s you have already.
I would also expect the actual transfer speed to be less than the connection speed. The average throughput on 54Mbit/s systems is around 22Mbit/s so for Draft N the average will be about 108Mbit/s.
As I said, future drivers will bring speeds closer to the promised transfer rates - but unlikley to get to the 300Mbit/s promised.
