Dead PCG-FX705 /DX CEK

Has anyone come across this before?
My PCG-FX705 died suddenly one morning, the previous night it was working but the following morning it would not boot.
The power lights come on, the hard drive spins up and the DVD/CD drive spins up if there is a disk in it, but there is no sign of life after that and no startup screen.
It does not boot from a floppy and it does not work on an external monitor.
Any help would be much appreaciated.

It sounds like the screen has gone rather than the computer itself dying.

Thanks for you reply, but I think there may be something else causing the problem. It seems to stop just short of bootup.

I have noted a few more things about this fault.

Caps Lock, num lock etc, does not appear to work. ( normally indicated by the LEDs)

Although the hard drive spins it does not change tone as it would do so, if it is being read.

I have tried it on the TV out as well as the external VGA but there is still no display.

If this fault sound familiar, I would really appreaciate any help.

Thanks

I would guess that it's a pretty serious hardware failure. Something on the motherboard or the processor failing. I fear your notebook needs to be looked at by an engineer.

I agree with Rob, it's something on the motherboard which has gone, not the display

Thanks very much for your thoughts, i'll have to take it for repair but it was worth trying.

Thanks again

Following some suggestions I have removed the CPU and cleaned the contact between the CPU die and the heat sink. There was no compound between the two and the heatsink looked a bit oxidised. Since puting the Laptop back together it has started working again except it does come up with the blue screen of death on occasions.
Could this be hardware or software?

Depends what the message is. The important bit is the 2nd line down, the bit in capital letters. Search Microsofts knowledge base on their website for the exact message, or tell it to one of us.
