Hi all
My T1 is only around 6 months old but is becoming increasingly balky. I get frequent screen freezes for no obvious reason, requiring a reset (ie pushing the reset button) to fix each time. I have to keep a safety pin attached to the Reader cover so I have the necessary implement easily to hand. Doing this 4 or 5 times an hour is not what I signed up for ! Before returning it for a warranty repair or replacement, I want to try a complete software refresh, but how do I do this ? Ideally I want to flatten the thing and reload from the web somehow - is that what's meant by a soft or hard reset (what's the difference) ? If so, how do I do these please ?

Just to close this off, and maybe help anyone else with similar problems, it turns out my PRS-T1 was faulty. I tried the hard reset, which certainly improved things, but I was still getting occasional freezes and needing soft resets. So it went back under warranty and I'm told they replaced the motherboard. It's behaved itself since I got it back (I do now have the dreaded Error -9999 when trying to log into the Sony Store but others get that too so I guess that isn't because of my device - doesn't bother me greatly because I don't buy books, I borrow from the library).
So, overall, I'm pleased that finally it seems to have been resolved but pretty pigged-off with Sony's QA for sending out a device that must have been faulty from the start, resulting in a pretty frustrating user experience.
The manual tells you how to do soft & hard resets.
The main difference is all content is lost with a hard reset, so back-up/locate all downloads you wish to retain.

Just to be clear though, the manual does not talk about soft & hard resets - at least the user guide that came pre-loaded on my T1 doesn't. That just talks about using the reset button on the base, which I've had to do frequently: I now understand that's what's meant by "soft reset".

But I'm not sure even this is what I want. If this were a PC, I'd be talking about formatting the C drive and doing a clean install of the operating system from scratch. I was really trying to find out what the equivalent operation is on a T1, and how to do it.
Well, I'd try the hard reset first, if no luck then, I suppose consider uninstalling the lot and re-installing afresh.
Never done it, so don't know how easy it is - and if it would help.
The only two options you have given the issues you mention
First is a hard reset, this is the closest to wiping a PC and starting again. This may sort you out.
The second option is to take it back as it could be faulty. Ive had my reader (PRS 650) for almost 2 years and not experianced the issues you have.
