Computer crash

Hi all, this is my first post. I have just received my PRS-T1. I connected it to my computer and it loaded up the drivers for it and everything was ok. When I tap the icon on the reader to enter data transfer mode my computer crashes and restarts. I am using Windows Vista.

I tried connecting it to my partners laptop also running Vista and the same thing happens. I am unable to connect the ereader in transfer mode. Does any one know how to solve this problem please.

Just a thought I don't think has been mentioned - have you tried a soft reset ?

Only my "Data ...Mode"  froze/messed about once, I did a reset, and all was solved.

( With a soft reset, you won't lose any content...... )

Sony's recommendations for Vista is that it is using Service Pack 2:-

The recommended system requirements for the Reader: Vista section.

Operating System:-  Microsoft Windows Vista (32/64 bit).

Windows Vista Home Basic with Service Pack 2 or later.

Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 2 or later.

Windows Vista Business with Service Pack 2 or later.

Windows Vista Ultimate with Service Pack 2 or later.

Was 'PC Reader' and 'Adobe Digital Editions' software installed on both the computers that you tried the eReader with?

The ideal would be to try another Sony USB cable in case the one you have is faulty, I have just tried a Blackberry USB data cable as a test and it works fine with my eReader and 'PC Reader' software. Also you could try different USB ports on your computer in case one is a bit dodgy although this is not likely if both computers you tried crashed.

If you have a SatNav you could try connecting that to the computer using a USB data cable (it switches to data mode automatically on connection) and see if that crashes your computer, it would at least prove that the fault then lies with how USB is implemented.

Hi scanman, thank you for replying to my problem. Both computers have the recommended requirements,Vista Premium: service pack 2.

I have just connected my satnav to both computers using same USB port on both. No problems; computers did not crash.

I have Adobe Digital Editions installed and I have installed Calibre but not PC Reader. Neither Calibre or Digital Editions were running when trying to enter transfer mode on the PRS-T1.

Unfortunately I don't have another USB data cable that fits the Sony, my Satnav has a larger plug.

My partner liked the PRS-T1 so much that he ordered one for himself last night, should arrive in the next day or two. I can then try his cable with my Sony. Hopefully the problem doesn't repeat on both readers.

I have managed to download some books using wi-fi without any problems, so at least I can begin reading books. I have also downloaded software version 1.0.03.11140 to my computer ready to update the software on the Sony. Obviously can't do this until I can get into transfer mode.

At least your making progress! You have proved there is no problem with USB ports. Once you have tried another Sony USB data cable it will then prove whether your existing data cable is faulty or there is a problem with the eReader.

Just had a further thought maybe the drivers for the eReader did not install properly, they are all Microsoft drivers.

If you connect your eReader to your computer but do not enable 'data connect' just leave it in charging mode and then go to Windows 'Device Manager/Disk Drives' you should see the following three entries:-

Sony PRS-T1 SD USB Device

Sony PRS-T1 Setting USB Device

Sony PRS-T1 USB Device

If you highlight each line one at a time and then use the right mouse button to check properties it should indicate whether the device is working properly, you can also click on driver to see what the driver revision is.

It is just something further to eliminate as a probable cause of your problem.

I have checked the drivers and all are working and all have driver revision 6.0.6002.18005.

Hi carpetmojo, just pressed the reset on the reader with a paperclip. Connected the Sony and waited for the computer to acknowledge. Tapped on the Data Transfer icon and.............it worked :-))) I am in data transfer mode at last. Have updated the software successfully and Calibre recognises the Sony.

Just to be sure I removed the Sony and reconnected and it worked, back in Data Transfer Mode.

Weird that a brand new device needed to be reset.

Thank you so much scanman01 and carpetmojo for your help, much appreciated.

That was a good call by carpetmojo (soft reset), it would appear that a reset cures various PRS-T1 problems!

The following website has advice on resetting the PRS-T1:-

I recently had to do a soft reset on my eReader when it froze but I did lose data.
