E5 has started to die at around 30% battery

Over the past couple of days I my phone has been dying frequently.

During my work days the phone is idle most of the time and I can usually have a fully charged phone in the morning and still have around 40% by the time I'm off to bed however lately I'm lucky if my phone lasts till 4pm before turning off.

i have noticed that when my phone is in use, the battery has started to drop rather rapidly and the once it gets to around 30% the battery level immediately drops to zero and powers off (it literally did it while I was looking at it).  It doesn't let me power it back on until it's charged enough.

ive also noticed that if I use it for even a moment while it's on charge the battery still drops. Anyone have any ideas as to what's happening?

Hi Everyone,

You may experience that the battery drains quickly or becomes unusually hot on your Xperia E5. This is known behaviour caused by the AVG Protection/Antivirus app version 6.10.9 (released May 22nd 2018). We have asked AVG to release a new version to fix this issue as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, there is a workaround that will correct the behaviour immediately. Simply follow the instructions below to disable AVG Protection/Antivirus.

To disable AVG Protection

  1. From your Home screen, tap the Application screen icon.
  2. Find and tap Settings > Apps.
  3. Tap AVG Protection.
  4. Tap DISABLE.
  5. Confirm by tapping DISABLE APP.

Hi @DarkFire;

First of all what is your battery condition under Service Menu>Service Tests>Battery Health (dial *#*#7378423#*#* for the Service Menu)?

Test also the phone beahviour is Safe Mode to see if same thing happens (https://support.sonymobile.com/global-en/xperiaz5/kb/0231018877589a7b01429399b11c00699b/)

Last week or so my battery life has dropped from a day's usage to just a few hours. Anyone else had a similar issue? I'm wondering if it could be a software issue as performance has dropped off so quickly? Phone is 18 months old, might be time for a new one...

I have always have issues with my phone coz of how it drains battery. I can't even play music or use it for other apps like games etc. The phone has been to the Xperia repair Centre twice and no solution but sorrows.

Same problem losing power rapidly and taking ages to charge also battery is very hot on charging only since last week

I also reset to factory default, this made a slight improvement but I think it has to an update on the software which is causing the issue

I have the same issue for about the last week. Phone suddenly drains, especially from in the 50 percent range, drops down rapidly, only lasting for less than a day on full charge  Today went from 19% to switching itself off within 2 minutes. Takes hours to charge and feels very hot. Has taken 4 hours to get to 80%. It is just around a year old so can't believe it needs to be replaced yet?

How long is the battery test supposed to take? It's currently been going for over 16hrs and I'm not sure what's happening. Am I supposed to leave it charging the whole time or am I supposed to let it test it without charging?

My Sony E5 battery just drains  When I go online it gets so hot the screen has visible burn marks on the screen. It is obviously a manufacture fault as it seems to be a problem with a lot of Sony phones. Just wondering why Sony are still allowed make phones when they are a danger to the public

@DarkFire;

What battery test are you talking about?

The battery test in the service menu is immediate, it shows you instantly the battery condition.

To test the device in safe mode use for the same time you normally will detect the problems in the device, if nothing happens in that time it means that is some app (or several) that are causing the problems.
