I have a VGN-AR61ZU, a beautiful high spec laptop with some highly annoying "features"
When I unplug the ethernet cable, it sometimes refuses to recognise th ecable when I plug it in in a different room. I love my laptop but it results in me rebooting 50% of the time I do this. It is actually stopping me from doing my job because I cant move from meeting to meeting with my laptop.
I wish I had never upgraded - I never had this problem with my old XP Vaio.
I looked for a new driver but couldnt see one.
Any idas?? Anyone, help?
cheers
Hi and welcome to Club Vaio.
Does the network server allocate a new IP address each time you connect?
If so have a look here: - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928233/en-us
If you have a fixed IP address you may want to try disabling IPv6 support as this is the new Vista protocol: - http://www.mydigitallife.info/2007/09/09/disable-and-turn-off-ipv6-support-in-vista/

Thanks for the welcome, regarding the ip...no it doesnt. It says that there is no cable plugged in (but there is)
So ipconfig /renew doesnt do anything because the system seems to loose the cable all together. 😞
I try restarting the network adaptor but that makes no difference. I try reseating the cable, no joy. Only a restart will allow the connection to re-establish.
The crazy thing is that sometimes it works and I get away without a reboot but about 50% of the time it just refuses to work.
BTW, I'm running Vista Ultimate, fully up to date.
I just had to wait 2 days for Sony to respond that it isnt a viao problem - please contact microsoft. How bad is that? They really dont care do they? Arrrgggg 😞
Disappointing!
Are you putting the Vaio into Sleep mode as well as disconnecting the LAN?
Have you looked in Device Manager and checked the Power Management tab for your network adapter to make sure the box "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" is unchecked?
Alternatively, look at the Details Tab and check the Power Capabilities and the Power State Mappings in the drop down list to make sure 'Wake from D1' and 'Wake from D2'are supported.
Sorry, clutching at straws here!!!!

I appreciate your help, I'll try what you suggest. Cheers
I just unchecked the "allow windows to turn off power to this device" box in device manager/properties for that ethernet adaptor.
Hopefully that will fix it, I'll try for a few days, I really appreciate your support.
