AirPlay from iPhone for iTunes content
Looking for a new TV, first 4K one. I’m down to a Sony and LG for few reasons, one being support for Dolby HDR.
So Sony/Apple announced In Nov/Dec 2019 that Apple TV+ app would be coming, it still hasn’t but AirPlay is supported on recent TV’s now.
So if you AirPlay from an iPhone to a Sony TV, for an iTunes 4K Dolby HDR movie what resolution etc does it do it in?
I believe the Apple TV+ app on other TV’s do iTunes in 4K and Dolby HDR, but what about AirPlay?
Is Disney+ app on the TV’s now as well?
thanks

Hi MrQwerty111,
Try getting in touch with Sony Support about this to see what they suggest.
Thanks,
Pascale

I'm not sure about the AirPlay resolution as I've not tried it myself, but the Disney+ app is available on all Android TVs according to the official Sony website here: https://www.sony.co.uk/electronics/support/articles/00184942

Could you try AirPlay? Even an iTunes trailer I believe will be 4K and Dolby HDR for test, if you don’t have an iTunes movie
thanks

Already have and the answer they basically didn’t know. Even though it’s a function on their TV, and they are the manufacturer!?!

Hi MrQwerty,
I guess since AirPlay is a feature owned by Apple, they can't really make a statement about what it can and can't do as that's subject to change by Apple.
Since AirPlay is developed by Apple, I think only they can shed light on what is and isn't supported. Isn't the whole point of having all these different devices support the same feature for it to be consistent across all of them?

Do Sony just say yes we’ll have that and then have no idea what it does?
So every feature that isn’t Sony I have to ask the manufacturer, “Dolby HDR doesn’t work on my Sony TV - see Dolby”. “The OS crashes - see Google” etc.
I’ve asked Apple, they said ask Sony, I’ve asked Sony, they said ask Apple.....no one knows, even the manufacturer’s....

It can be hard to follow but it is like this, especially if different devices are involved using features implemented by different parties... in any case it seems that 4K streaming is allowed on Sony Airplay 2 implementation even if it seems it cannot manage also multichannel audio... https://www.reddit.com/r/bravia/comments/gb3te0/a9g_airplay_support_can_i_stream_4k/?sort=new

So you get 4K/HDR as it’s not via iPhone as such really.
Great, pity Sony don’t know this....
