Sony Xperia 1 iii fingerprint sensor no longer in settings

I've had my Xperia 1iii for just over 3 years and over a year ago the fingerprint sensor stopped working and then disappeared altogether from settings. I've just done 2 factory restores for another issue and I hoped this would fix it but it is still missing. If anybody has a solution for this I would be very grateful to hear it. Thanks

My wife had the same thing happen on her old Xperia 5 iii, but when we replaced it and factory reset the phone to give to my youngest child, the fingerprint scanner started working again, so I think it was just a badly structured update that broken that generation of fingerprint readers.
