VGN-NR21Z Mass Storage Controller

I have a notebook that has been functioning well for a few years. It has a USB hdd attached to store photos etc. Last week when I rebooted it tried to download a driver and failed. I had not attached any new devices. My external HDD stopped showing up in My Computer. I went into device manager and it says there is no driver installed for Mass Storage Controller. When i try to fix it through using Windows to find the right driver online it fails. Any ideas / advice welcome.

Can you tell us the model of the external hard disk? Can you try it in another computer e.g. a work machine? I am just wondering if the drive is faulty.


The missing driver does seem to be a common issue, but I'd like to see if the drive is OK first.
