Same issue for my Xperia Z3C. I've been a loyal Sony user for over 15 years and a Xperia phone owner for past 5 years.
I will ban Sony phones for life and other Sony products from my household until I see a satisfatocry resolution from Sony.
I'm disappointed that the last official comment on this issue from a Sony rep was in May.
Same problem with me. Where are you Sony!? Are you going to scratch your imagine like that or start helping us!? Please Help the thousand users having the same problem who believed in your brand and spent a lot of money in this piece of "smart"phone.
i have same problem... and it was working just fine 5 min before
I had a similar problem. Upgraded to Android 6.0.1 (wish I hadn't. Battery life gone from 3 days to 1.5. days!) and suddenly developed a problem with the navbar at bottom of the screen. Just wouldn't respond. It did work fine for a week.
However, I don't think it is hardware. There is a Diagnostics app in programs (not sure if this came in with 6.0.1).
Anyway, take the 'Test' (middle) tab and select Touchscreen.
Here, you have to clear the 'mist' from the screen.
Notice two keys at the bottom of the screen - NO and YES.
These work *every* time with this test - and they are in the area of the navbar exactly.
Surely, if it was H/w then these would not work?
Interestingly, the object of this test is to clear the whole screen. I've noticed the very bottom part always seems to have a problem.
Sometimes you can clear it, other times you can't.
However, regardless, the NO and YES keys still work.
So, I think it is some kind of OS issue although why it worked and then it didn't, heaven knows.
The other thing which is really interesting is that, if you tap the navbar buttons repeatedly, they eventually work after a few seconds. Weird. So there is definately some response from the screen albeit intermittent.
However, the good news is that there is an app which can help:
In Play Store, search for Back Button. You should get a hit Back Button (No root) by ogapps. This works really well as a set of floating buttons. In Play store, open it, and it will ask you to confirm okay in accessibility. Agree to this.
In configuration, I suggest a foreground colour of black, and background of white. You can also re-order them which will match your device. Works very well and you can move around the screen.
Bottom line? I think it's an OS issue so we need to await a fix by Sony.
another disappointed sony xperia z3 compact user with the exact problem - back, home, recent apps button at the bottom do not work just a few days after expiry of warranty. model d5803; android version 6.0.1; security patch dtd 1 march 2016; kernel version 3.4.0-perf-g43ea728
it is clear that sony is aware of this problem but unable to fix it..
will be my last sony product if there is no response from sony on this..
I've had the same issue since last Tuesday (19th July)...the comments in here were really helpful e.g. the back button app. I went through the laborious process of ordering a repair with Sony as it's just in warranty still...sent my phone off at the post office today.
Looking forward to hearing back from Sony on this although, given how difficult contact has been with trying to organise the repair, I am dubious about it if i'm honest
