Having updated my 1000xm3's over the wekeend, there seems to be an introduction of hiss and a background noise of what sounds like distant traffic (even though I can hear nothing at all without the headphones on) when using Active Noise Cancellation, which was previously stellar. The potency of the noise cancelling is noticeably weaker since updating (I'd estimate around 40% less). Familiar auditory environments which were previously rendered almost entirely silent are now notedly audible. I've checked that the noise cancelling slider is left-most, and indeed it is.
I'm also disappointed to find I can't ask Alexa to play music from Spotify, and I press the button and just say "Play Metallica", it responds with "Shuffling music by Metallica on Amazon Music", yet nothing plays at all.
This update is very much a downgrade as it stands.

@JayMan while planned obsolescence is an issue and being done though updates I doubt that Sony willingly sabotaged their flagship Headphones. The time would be just off.
I believe, mistakes were made and Sony is too ignorant to admit them. There's one hacker/coder that made firmware downgrading possible. Perhaps an Sony insider.
That being said, I too always advise to not update. Unless there are problems.
The only thing interesting of the firmware 4.1.1 is the option to disable voice guidance + beeps. Perhaps someone can add this to the 2.0.0 firmware or app.
SONY made me very disappointed by what they did and doing in the past several months related to the ver 4.1.1.
SONY made me very very disappointed when I followed the tutorial and python script by @FormalDetail5 on reddit to successfully downgrade to ver 2.0.0.
Only 3 model for 1000XM3.

As with any technology that is slave to an app and/or OTA, I assume the obsoleting is incrementally implemented. The reduced NC is just the beginning. I get they will continue to function but at reduced performance levels to ensure there are ‘better” options available.
Consider the XM3 or QC35 the best noise Cancellers on the market right now then consider the reality that noise cancelling technology has ‘peaked’ on an engineering level..where does that leave a future XM4 or QC45? By slightly diminished performance levels on current models they are able to market potential new models as ‘our best’ etc, and side by side comparisons with previous version will confirm that they are indeed the ‘best’ however it’s clear to me that they are only better because the manufacturers have deliberately reduced performance capabilities of previous versions. Also check the Bose forums and note how the past two firmware updates have had a negative impact on NC performance. Here we have Sony employing the same tactics.
Interestingly, the only noise cancelling headphone that I own that have retained their out of box stellar performance are my Bose QC25 and MDR-1000X. Both amazing headphones that “Lack” app support (a good thing imo) and do not receive over the air updates. I’m inclined to say you get what you pay for with them.. Sadly I don’t feel we get what we paid for when the manufacturers have access & control of our devices by way of updates. There’s too much manipulation & potential for underhand behaviour. That out of box experience is all to short lived imo with update-able tech.
i said it before and I stand by that OTA (over the air) updates are the curse of modern technology, on a consumer level...On a corporate level, well thats a merry go round of wins.
Downgraded mine to 2.0 too now. Once I realised Terminal on my Mac was running Python 2, changed it to 3 and all worked as it should. Really pleased.
People that have downgraded back to 2.0 what is your honest opinion now, is there really much of a difference?
Many users say the difference is minimal....
I think ANC might be a bit better with 2.0.0, but it is not a night and day difference. On the first day I felt it was better and that it was more silent and I heard people talk less on my public transport commute.. now after a while I notice that I can still hear higher pitched noises especially when no music is playing (people talking, chips bag crumpling, etc.).
>I think ANC might be a bit better with 2.0.0, but it is not a night and day difference.
That's interesting.
On what platform did you do the upgrade?
There’s a definite improvement but I won’t know for sure until I’m wearing them in an Office environment on Friday. Will post back
