The RED connection should be wired to your ignition switch terminal that is live when the key is in the accessory position.

The YELLOW connection should be wired to a source that is live at all times.

If your ignition switch does not have an Accessory terminal connection, connect the RED wire to a source that is live at all times.  I always connect both the red and the yellow to a source live at all times so the ignition switch does not need to be turned to the accessory position to be able to listen to the radio - but this is personal choice.

It sounds to me like your yellow wire is not connected properly or there is a poor earth connection.

Can the radio be turned on when the car ignition is turned off and the key removed?

The problem is that you are connected to a switched live so no power is getting to the unit when the ignition is off.

normally if you swop the red and yellow connections in the sony loom that cures the problem- however in some cars you need to locate the permanent live

Hi, mine is storing the preset stations, and keeping the time etc... but it appears that you can't have the unit playing without the ignition on (Ford Mondeo Mk3)

Is that correct?

Ive set up the 'auto-off' function thing to 30seconds, but I would really like to be able to switch the unit on without the key in ignition so that if (for arguments sake) I have a passenger who wants to listen to radio whilst I nip into a shop or something... at the moment it appears that it isn't possible. Or am I missing a setting somewhere??
