Check that the sound control hasnt been turned down.
Go to the control pannel , select the sounds and audio devices program, then click on the advanced button in the Device volume area, this will bring up another window the volume control window. Here click on options and select advanced controls, also click options and select properties make sure that the cd player has a tick in the box then click ok. In the Volume control window make sure that none of the devices you want to use are muted.
If this doesnt work try to uninstall the CD/DVD drive from your system control pannel.
If this doesnt work try a system restore WARNING THIS WILL ERASE ALL YOUR DATA.
