Need help with Adobe Reader 9 & PDF files

Would you please help me with my question. I bought my FW Vaio couple months ago. I noticed that it cae with Adobe Reader 9. Unfortunately despite havinf this software, I am not able to read any PDF files. I asked helped from the Sony Help Desk in Ireland, unfortunately none of them were able to help me in this matter. One technician told me to copy the file and paste it in Paint program and the read it!! Another person told me to call Adobe Company for this matter.
Whenever I try to open a pdf file, the following message appears in a box saying:
The Adobe Arobat/Reader that is running can not be used to view PDF files in the Web Browser. Adobe Arobat/Reader version 8 or 9 is required. Please exit and try again.

I would appreciate your help in this matter.
