Sounds like the thing's died.
Have a look through your Thompson directory.

for anyone whos interested, i changed the cmos (bios) battery in my laptop, and so far its booting all the time, so at present it seems to have fixed my problem.

the only one little problem i have now if anyone can help, when i changed the battery or while having problems i lost all the bios settings, and when i powered up it reverted to default and it apears its only seeing once of my ram moduals (512mb) and theres 2 installed.
can anyone sugest any soloutions?

It's probably not a BIOS setting. Have you tried removing and reseating the memory modules?

it was only by talking to people at work.
i took the notebook to a few local 'service centres' who wanted £50+ to give an estimate, also tried calling sony vaio and was put off when it said on the recorded message i first got, something about out of warenty technical help will be charged at £20 a call 'please have your credit or debit card ready'
i found after warenty repairs to be very few and far between and the ones i did find were hinting at an uneconmical repair.
