Extended warranty - How it works

Hello, I am slightly confused of how the extended warranty works. I have bought a VAIO  plus warranty extension PCGE-VPW2. Now I I get is a booklet inside, regarding some information. Is my warranty extended just by buying it? Or do I have to register it somewhere. There is a label with a code on the front of the booklet which I am told to put on my laptop. Can someone help me please?
