Hello
I have a new Vaio PCG-TR1MP.
My hard disk is making a clunking sound when it is not in use. (ie the power is on and the machine is just idling) The clunking noise is the same sound as when I shutdown the PC.
I read somewhere that the clunking may be the hard disk parking to conserve energy.
Could this be right? Or could it be something else?
Either way. Is there anything I can do to stop it? The clunking noise is driving me nuts!!!
Besides the clunking the HD seems fine.
Thanks
CS
I think it's quite normal, nothing much you can do about it.
this can be solved if you have the drive below. Follow this link to HP's website.

You need a firmware upgrade for the disk drive - probably a hitachi DK23CA-20 or 30 or 40.
Follow the instructions listed on that page - including how to check that your drive is a hitachi DK23CA
YOu can also find this fix on dell's website, sony's... not sure.
This worked for me...
