XR-48A90K - using a DVD with this TV

I use quite an old Sony DVD player with this TV I recently purchased. I wonder if anyone can tell me DVDs marked 'ultra HD Blu Ray region free' can be used on this player, BDP S370, - or whether the benefits of the disk (especially picture) would not be apparent when using this particular player?

Hi @Harry21   It is not clear if you have an old BDP-S370 (2010) or thinking of buying one?

I think I bought it in 2015. Would there be any indication on it whether its old edition or never?

Hi @Harry21

If you already have the Blu-ray player, why don’t you test it yourself? Check out the model manuals date below.

Would there be any indication on it whether its old edition or never?”. Sorry, I have no idea what you are asking, could you expand or phrase that in a different way.

In order to play an ultra HD Blu-ray disk you have to have an ultra HD Blu-ray player that the s370 is not. So it won't work.

Sorry - meant to write 'whether its old edition or not'. My player has blu ray written on it....but didn't know whether there are different generations of blu ray disks that only new player models can deal with, before I buy some expensive blu ray dvds

My s370 has blu ray written on it - though it was bought about 8 years ago

Hi @Harry21   Sorry, I didn’t notice that you used the word “Ultra” in your question. Yes it will play Blu-ray Discs which are in HD only 1080 x 1920. It is a NO to Ultra HD Blu-ray Discs as your player does not support UHD 2160 x 3040 (4K).

@Harry21 You can either check with presales people about the specifications of the Blu-ray you have in mind, or you can go on Sony's website and check the part on the manual where it says playable discs, I guess! That way you'll be certain on what you want to buy as you said!

This player is so old (2010) that UHD wasn’t even thought of then; it didn’t come in until 2016.

So, unsurprisingly, the manual, also 2010, has no mention of either UHD or Ultra or 4K, and therefore won’t tell you that it can’t play UHD discs, as such discs hadn’t been invented yet:-

Nonetheless, it’s a perfectly good player for HD BluRay discs (blue cases), even the latest releases. Just not for UHD BluRay discs (black cases, usually) which anyway cost more.

Your TV will automatically upscale HD to UHD anyway, by cleverly inventing 3 new pixels for every one provided on an HD disc. But those may not be the exact ones to be found on the UHD disc, though they will certainly be very close 😛
