since movies is a system app, i think you cannot watch in landscape if auto rotate is off..
try mxplayer , you can view in landscape mode even autorotate is off.

As I understand there is no specific settings for this in the app so I suggest that you use auto rotate and tilt the screen to use landscape view.

I think what the OP is requesting for is the Movies app to automatically play videos in landscape regardless of "auto rotate" being on or off. It should still force to landscape or at least, put an option for us within the app.
I've noticed that if I am playing files from it via media server from another device it rotates the video automatically even when my system auto rotate is off.
When using it as a streaming player for some Web videos too, it rotates automatically while my system auto rotate is off.
It should do same for the onboard memory videos and movies.
It's a great app but this can make it beat other third party apps. It will also male Sony users like me appreciate Sony native apps more.

Ya... can't seem to find any option for this otherwise a great great movie app from Sony.
The missing option to play video in landscape mode.. which force me to use MX Player at this moment...
(Play in background implemented... thank God and we hope this option will be there soon !)

There is a new update for movie that has the following :
Sony has updated the Movies app from build version 7.2.A.0.4 to 7.3.A.0.2. The update allows you to easily playback videos full-screen from the details page, simply by rotating the device into landscape mode. Sony has also improved the stability.
But i still need to turn on the auto-rotate right ?
