Sony HT-RT3 Sub-Woofer Cooling Fan Noise

There is an annoying whining noise coming from the sub-woofer whenever the unit is switched on. The fan speed increases when audio output from the TV is heard and during lulls in TV conversation the fan can clearly be heard spooling down as the speed decreases. I am on the second sub-woofer unit and Sony have ordered a third one as a replacement. To be honest I am not expecting this one to be much, if any, better than the first 2.

Clearly someone in the Sony organisation has missed the noisy fan issue or decided customers will have to put up with it.

The noise is distracting and totally unacceptable.

Hi All,

I went to my local Curry's Store in Stirling and spoke to the Manager who didn't know anything about this issue. On my way out of the Store I decided to stop at the tech counter. I spoke to a guy there who had heard of it but nobody had ever taken the units back. So, a fortnight ago I took my Woofer only down and picked it back up this morning. Sony gave it a Software update and replaced the Fan - touch wood, it working perfectly and there are no noises.

Jecht_Sin, From my own experience I can confirm there is a Sony fix for this issue which makes the fan run at constant and lower speed. Whether updates are generally known about is another issue. I suggest getting in touch with your local Sony repair agent who can research the Sony website and get the update. Mine was done free of charge in less than an hour workshop time.

Hi, I live in the UK, I have had the this system for 9 months and the fan I very annoying.  After seeing all these posts I have rang Sony support in the UK several times asking for the firmware update and they keep saying there isn't one. Can anyone tell me how to get the firmware on my system in the UK.  I really need help with this thanks

I took the Sony Woofer on its own to Curry's/PC World Tech Guys, they sent it away to a Sony Specialist and I got it back within a Fortnight sorted. They know about it but just not advertising it.

I took my Sony Woofer back to Curry's/PC World and had it back within a Fortnight sorted. I just told the Tech Guy that I had been notified by Sony, he knew about it. But they aren't advertising the fact that it needs an upgrade.

I wish I could copy and post the repair sheet. They updated the Software and replaced the Fan.

Matrob92, I live near to Oxford and took it to J.F.Assosciates who are authorised Sony repair agents. The guy interrogated the Sony database while I was on the phone, told me he had found the firmware upgrade and said he could do it. I took the whole unit in and an hour later it was sorted.

Hi all,

Bad news I rang pc world and although they can update it for me because it is out of warranty they want £60 to do it  I carn't afford this. Does anyone know if there is any way to install the firmware myself or somewhere in Nottingham that would install the firmware for around £20 - £30?

I took my unit back to the Store along with Receipt as it was under 1 year old and had the unit Repaired free of charge. Got unit back in 3 weeks good as new.
