USB-powered drives are now commonplace and I have a spare 500gb one (Western Digital Passport). I have ordered a SVR-HDT500 Freeview HD HDD recorder and want to know if I can safely connect it, drawing power from the rear USB socket.
Actually, I have already received the HDT500 but had to return it as it was overheating and making far too much fan noise. This was before I connected my hard drive, which seemed rather ill-advised. I returned the unit for replacement. (It remained hot even when returned to Standby, and only cooled down after I disconnected its power supply.) I note someone commented on Amazon they had had the same problem.
