Receiving MMS messages with mobile data turned off

Normally I cannot receive MMS messages with mobile data turned off. I have had my data turned off for some days now so I was very surprised yesterday morning when I turned on my phone and found I had received a text with a picture attached. Thinking that something had changed, I did an experiment by sending an MMS to my phone from another smartphone. Nothing was received. I phoned Sony support and they said the reason I had received the first MMS was because I had WiFi available. When I pointed out that this situation also applied when I had sent myself an MMS but I'd not received the message that time, the person in support was unable to explain. This morning, when I turned on my phone, the MMS I had sent to myself appeared!

This seems strange, and I am wondering if a phone uses a bit of data when being turned on (even though mobile data isn't enabled) and this is why I got the MMS messages. Does anyone know if that is the case please?
