Last week my headphones were working fine but then on Sunday evening the jack would not go in. After some fiddling I managed to scrape out some fluff and they started working again but with a slight buzzing sound in the ears.
Anyway, today when I play a song on Spotfiy, for example, the music plays but there are no vocals (the headphones are fine - I've used them with other devices today) and the buzzing sound is still there. I've no idea what is going on. Is the full sounds ever going to come back?
So is my phone knackered? A new one costs about £100, but are there places that can actually fix in and is it worth the cost?

Since the headphones work fine with other devices, maybe the issue it is the phone, perhaps only the 3.5mm jack, double check if you were able to remove everything, then again, perhaps you damage it when you were removing the "fluff". Have you tested a different pair of headphones?
Yes it's the same regardless of headphone, and maybe I did alter something with the fluff removal. The thing is I needed to remove it as the jack wouldn't fit in. I can live with the low buzz sound, but it's got worse today with the sound channels. I think it's f""""d.
if that's the case you have 2 options, either contact your Local support to get it inspected/repaired, or DIY

A further question - if I got blue tooth headphones would that bypass this problem?
Hi @portoman and sorry to hear about this.
I can see that you have already received some great information from @uliwooly and since it's the same with different headphones, it does sound like the audio jack is defect.
If it is the jack that is defect, it will work just fine with a Bluetooth headset/headphones as they don't use the jack at all and all sound is transferred wireless to your headset/headphones from the device.
Just to make sure that we cover everything and you don't send the device without doing some troubleshooting first, could you try and restart your device in safe mode and see if there is any change? In safe mode downloaded applications aren't loaded and we can easily check if any of them is the cause of this. I understand this may be strange as it occurred when removing fluff from the audio jack, but this only takes 5 minutes or so to do.
Just curious, do you know when you purchased the device? You mentioned that the part is not shipped to the UK so I assume you are from the UK and we offer a 24 month warranty there.

Thanks for the reply. I tested the bluetooth with a friend and it worked fine from my device, so I've bought some new headphones - cheaper than getting it fixed I think.
Out of interest, are some firms more reputable when it comes to sending phones off? I presume so (as usual), but does would you recommend if the problem recurs or a new one happens?

That is a very good question and I think the best thing to do is to see if there any website where customers has left a review and you can actually read / get some more information on how they operate and if other customers were happy with their service or not.
In general, authorized service centres are always the way to go as you will keep the warranty intact, if the device is water resistant, this will also be kept intact, you know that only original spare parts are used to repair the device and that the device is tested after it has been repaired.
I understand that the best part about third party service centres is that you can visit them in your town and pick the device up just a few hours later, compared to having to send it in and not have it available for some days. Keep in mind when you send the device off for repairs at an authorized service centre, there should always be an option to have the device recycled, in case you deem the cost to repair it to high and you rather spend the money that the repair would have cost, towards a new device.
