At Sony innovation is one of our main goals, and a good proof of that is our new DSC-QX lens style camera. Since IFA 2013 (possibly the most important electronics fair in the world) this gadget has become the most talked about piece of electronics both online and on the street. Here we’ll try to answer the most frequently asked questions about the QX and also reveal how you can win a QX100.

Is the QX a lens? Is it a camera? This is a very common question when it comes to the new lens style cameras. There are two models, the QX10 and the QX100. The QX is basically a Cyber-shot camera without a viewfinder and that’s why it needs your phone or tablet to become a camera – you could actually shoot without the phone, but you wouldn’t be able to see what you were capturing. It uses a memory card where you can save high resolution images, but you can also shoot without it as your phone will keep the low resolution pics.

How does it work? The QX connects to your phone via WI-FI or NFC technology and then becomes a wireless lens that you can either attach to your device using the adaptor provided, or simply use remotely – as if you could unleash your lens from the camera body and still take pictures with it. This feature gives you plenty of flexibility when it comes to planning your shots as you can leave the lens wherever you want and control it remotely with your phone (you’ll need the Playmemories Mobile app for that).

Another key question from users is... can I use it with a non-Sony Smartphone? Yes, you can. The QX device and Playmemories Mobile app are compatible with all phones with operating systems iOS 4.1 and Android 2.3 or above. This means that it works with the majority of phones out there. The QX is extremely light and you can control the aperture and shutter speed with the phone screen.

Some people wonder why they should buy a QX100 when there are already good cameras in the market at the same price. The answer is simple... the QX fits with the concept of phone photography and it’s going to revolutionize the way we take pictures with our phones. It’s estimated that by the end of the year there will be 1.4 billion smartphones in use in the world... imagine what all those people could do with a QX!

There are two more facts that you need to know about the QX100. First, it features a 20.2MP Exmor™ R CMOS sensor and Carl Zeiss optics – this means that your phone images will look amazing. And second, we are giving one away to the winner of our monthly competition. The theme of this month is street photography so hit the streets with your camera and upload your best shots to our competition gallery to be in with a chance of winning.

Good luck to all of you!
