Hi
Clueless at these things as I am I thought my Sony Handycam files would be able to play in Windows Movie Maker. Wrong!
Does anyone know how I can make my .mpg Sony files play? I don't want to convert them as they lose picture quality in conversion and it takes ages! I don't know why I bought a camcorder for £200 if I can't use it to edit videos directly! Grrrrrr....
My laptop runs on Vista.
Hope someone can help?
Thanks in advance...

Hello R8ck-chick - Welcome to the Sony Forums
I think there may be an issue with using .mpg files in Movie Maker for people who are not using Windows 7 / Windows 8. According to the Microsoft support page, Vista is not a supported system for using .mpg files in Movie Maker:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows-live/movie-maker-file-types-faq
You may be able to resolve this by downloading a Codec pack such as this one:
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/k_lite_codec_pack.htm
Also, you can set Windows Movie Maker to automatically download Codecs by ticking the appropriate box in the 'Options' menu.
Thanks,
Simon
Hi Simon
Thanks for your reply.
Another friend of mine said something about this codec thing and sent me a link to download which I did. It didn't make any difference. Trouble is I don't know what you're supposed to do with it anyway? Do you just download it and then movie maker should play the files or do you have to do something else? There were lots of options last time I downloaded it and I just clicked my way to the end!
Will try again anyway next time I'm on my laptop...
