File Numbering

I am learning to use the HDR CX250E camcorder. Is it possible to set the file numbering to run in sequence? Meaning ... it will allocate the next never used file number and not reuse a past number should a previously used file number be deleted off the SD card. Each file will always have a unique number up to say 1000 before reuse.

I would appreciate advice please. Ron

Hello RonSid

If you are importing these video files to your computer, are you doing so with the Playmemories software or are you using an alternative? If you have already installed this, you would be able to adjust the file numbers without having to install extra software.

Alternatively, with the files on an SD card, you could just insert this into a basic USB card reader and use the file explorer in Windows (or Mac) to manually rename each file individually.

Thanks,

Simon

This is not possible (continuos file numbering).

However if you improt your movies with Picture Motion Browser or PlayMemories the files will be named automatically by imprort date (unique to each file) and thereofre double naming is prevented.

Thanks cmosse for this clarification.

Don't want to add yet another photo/video programme to my pc eg PlayMemories, so I will have to use a work around and manually rename the imports once downloaded.

Seems odd that a continuous number scheme is not the normal file sequence.

Just using Windows 7 for video imports ... I use Photoshop Elements only for pics. I went to install PlayMemories but immeadiately it started to capture links to all my 000's of pictures! What I use is sufficient and I am very familiar with Elements.

Renaming files is the way to go ... strange file numbering system that Sony use for this camcorder!

Thanks for your reply Simon.

Hello again

Something else that I thought of earlier is that there are also basic file utilities for renaming files in bulk. At some point in the future, you may wish to take a look at Bulk Rename Utility that can be downloaded from here:

Apart from being able to specify rules for automatically renaming a large quantity of files, you can also use this software to extract information from an image's EXIF data (i.e. the date) and then use this to create a custom sequence of names. Like I say, perhaps something to try at some other point

Thanks Simon ... you are very active in this forum. I appreciate early day's guidence from those that know:smileyhappy:

I will have a look at the renaming link ...

What I do now is to download the videos (only ... without all the other stuff) to my pc, set them in the correct date order if necessary using the standard Windows7 facilities, select all and rename in a sequence. This way you end up with a file scheme say ... Sony (1), Sony (2) etc.
