Xbox One X, HDMI 2.1, and 4K @ 120Hz for XH90 (XH9005 XH9296)

I can't get the Xbox One X to set a 4K resolution at 120Hz, advice?

(VRR and ALLM boxes remain unchecked)

Setup

  • I've updated my XH9005 (XH90) to the latest HDMI 2.1 firmware (6038).
  • Using a premium HDMI 2.1 (48Gbps rated) cable plugged into TV's Port 3 and Xbox One X.

Background

  • Xbox One X has HDMI 2.1 support, so 4K @ 120Hz should be in spec
  • I am aware the GPU cannot get close to 120Hz in 4K, but the lower intensive games should be in the threshold of VRR for the XH90.

What am I doing wrong? Much appreciated.

Thanks, I've reached out to a "specialist" at Microsoft Support.

They weren't immediately sure,  but eventually sent me this link:

https://support.xbox.com/en-US/help/hardware-network/display-sound/4k-gaming-at-120hz

Saying that 4K @ 120Hz is only possible with the Xbox Series X and not for the One X... 😓

Hi,

Maybe the games do not support this resolution/frequency.

I think it's better to check with Xbox support regarding this matter since they should know if this can be achieved.

Cheers

I don't think we have any game support it. I think we should wait for next generation

Go to settings. Picture then tv settings i think it is. Ill double check this later when im in front of the tv but in here you can look at the external inputs select the hdmi your xbox is plugged into. Make sure its on enhance not stardard. Once u done this change xbox setting to 120Hz. Then test with the option on the xbox. Its now ticked 4k 120Hz. U cant have dolby vision and 120 at the same time.

Thanks for the info to change the HDMI settings at the "External Input" settings on the TV.

Still didn't work for me.

  • Changing to the 2nd option HDMI Enhanced Format (that includes 4k120 in its description), I still am not able to get 4K 120 Hz on the Xbox One X.
  • Changing to the 3rd option HDMI Enhanced (Dolby Vision), the Xbox One X enables the "Allow Dolby Vision" check box. So the HDMI changes are doing something, just not enabling 120Hz in 4K resolution. 😞

@Robbo171  - did you manage to run 4K120 on your Xbox One X?

Hi, The Xbox One X cannot output 4k/@120hz because it only has HDMI 2.0, however you can output 1080@120hz. We could also run games at 2160@1440p2k if Sony enabled that resolution on the XH90. Sony have said they will consider adding 1440p res if enough owners requested it.

The above reply maybe in error, after research it seems the one x was updated allowing hdmi 2.1 features. However Sony have not enabled VRR or ALLM on this tv. It seems that if you do not own a PS5 you cannot take advantage of VRR which is one of the reasons i bought this tv in the first place. The Xbox one X is able to use VRR which would make gaming  much smoother. Sony please enable these options so non playstation owners can take advantage of these new features.

Hi - did you manage to find a solution for this?

No luck, I still have not been able to get 120Hz from the Xbox One X.

Yes, the Xbox One X does indeed support HDMI 2.1, it was officially the first console to support it, that's why the video output ALLM, VRR, 4K@120Hz options all show up in the console's video settings menu.

I've installed the latest 6041 firmware for the XH90 last night, and the same issue with the Xbox One X.

120Hz works on my PS5 (on Dirt 5). PS5 does not do VRR or ALLM yet. Although the XH90 is claimed to have VRR and ALLM capability, I am still unable to test this, as my Xbox One X can't enable 4K@ 120Hz as a starter. And, I don't have a next-gen GPU with HDMI 2.1 at my disposal.

Also, there is no mention of ALLM or VRR in the latest 6041 firmware either, so I hope ALLM and VRR to be available later down the road, as I purchased my XH90 for its HDMI 2.1 features.

TBH, feels like us XH90 owners are beta testing for Sony's 2021 models...and I'm starting to feel buyer's remorse...

I found this article about Sony purportedly acknowledging the 4k/120 problems.

https://www.glitched.online/the-sony-bravia-x900h-4k-120hz-mode-does-suffer-from-a-blur-issue/

I'm unsure of the timeline, and whether they've updated the firmware from this, I tried his solution (manual download of update & USB application), but it only says on the TV that its up-to-date.

You're right about remorse, I'll only bought the TV for 2.1, my previous Sony is only 3yrs old.  Should have bought the LG or the Samsung.

If you come across a fix I'd really appreciate you letting me know, I'll do the same.

Thanks!
