X90J apps being rearranged after TV is turned off

Hi all,

My setup has an external USB stick where I have apps installed and data stored.

However, despite working mostly well, I've noticed that apps installed in the external storage are always moved to the end of the list of apps after I turn off the TV after more than a few minutes.

My hypothesis is that once the TV is off, it cuts power to the USB socket after a few minutes and the USB stick 'disappears' for Google TV, which is still running in the background. At this point the apps vanish. Once the TV is turned back on and the USB socket gets its power back, the USB stick 'appears' for Google TV, the apps come back, but are placed at the end of the grid.

Anyone else with the same behaviour?

I am able to test my hypothesis by moving one of the wandering apps to internal memory and observing that it stays put but if I move it back to external memory it goes to the end of the grid again when I turn off the TV and back on.

Incidentally, once and only once I had another issue which was that the apps installed in the USB stick would not work at all. The only way to bring them back to live was to reinstall them. Forcing stop, clearing cache, clearing everything or restarting was not sufficient. Has anyone seen this at all?

Yes, if they are mainly on the USB stick and not natively on the TV you will not be able to arrange them as after turning the TV off they will not be saved on the internal memory on the device itself.

Also since that you're using the apps through a third party ( USB ) and not through the native apps on the TV or even the apps that you can download through the Playstore then they might not work that well on the TV itself.

I'm not sure this makes sense entirely for me. Firstly, using an external device as substitute for internal memory is a normal feature of Google TV. It works the same way with Chromecast with Google TV, for example. Secondly, the apps I installed are from the Play Store. They were not sideloaded. HBO Max, for example, installs itself on external memory by default if one is installed. DirecTV Go installs itself on internal, but allows you to move it to external afterwards. No hacking involved.

So the question for me really is why the TV is not treating the USB stick as internal memory, and why the apps moved to the end of the list.

Hi again @llima27, when i mentioned third party i was referring to the USB stick not the apps themselves, since it's an external memory " not built into the TV " the TV will not treat it as internal memory, it's just like when you connect a USB stick to your PC or MAC yes, you can view and use the files on it as long as it's connected and there is power going through it but your laptop won't recognize it as "internal memory" So if you save/arrange anything in regards to the files it will be saved on the USB itself not the PC if that makes any sense.

This is not how Chromecast with Google TV works with external storage, though. Once configured, external and internal are presented to the user as a single file system. Incidentally, this is also what I see on my Sony while the TV is in. 

In any case, I've dealt with this issue by setting up Google TV to remain on in the background even while the TV is off by enabling up IP control from remote apps.
