So the ATV1 platform IS STILL BEING UPDATED - v5.457 was released today!

However, it doesn't appear to be Oreo from the notes 😣:

Benefits and Improvements

  • Resolves a black screen issue caused by the High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) format decoding via the TV tuner
  • Improves the Wi-Fi function

Are we ever going to get Oreo in Europe for ATV1? It's been almost a whole year since other parts of the world got it...

I updated my XD93 and this new update still uses an old kernel with the August 2019 security updates which is very disappointing.

Come on Sony. Can we please have an answer as to why Europe does still not have Oreo after all this time?

I tried reaching out to Sony support reps to ask if there are plans for this update, but all I got was "we currently don't have information about future updates".

Not sure how much help this would be, but I left feedback to request the update.

I fully expect Sony ATV1 in the European region to be a lower specification than US and P/A market places now, and that Android 8 will not becoming to the EU Region.

Sony have always prioritized US and P/A customers, they have a history of it.

Unfortunately the TV, KDL-43W809C I own, even after a factory reset, is unusable for most purposes, everything is so ultra ultra slow! Yet annoyingly the HD picture quality is better than any other brand IMO once you are on a source hence why I bought it!

However TVs have to be usable, and my next TV will not be a Sony, as I don't like being a second class citizen just because I live in the European region, particularly when the update being withheld in the US or P/A regions has a proven ability to solve the TV performance issues I'm having!

Sony get around the differences in regions with broad warranty statements like this, and that's why they always get away with it:

Got all excited to see the update....just as disappointed when I read the release notes, updating at the moment...

It's a shame if they did not update the kernel and applied android patches, really not happy having a device on my home network that has not had security patches since 2019! (yes, it's behind a firewall, but still....)

I really doubt the ATV1 platform in EU would be of different specs than the US one (then again it is a trend in android cell phones SOCs so you never know), I do however suspect that it might be a licensing issue...

Either way it all feels a bit "discriminatory", kind of makes you wander if a complaint can be filed somewhere with EU regulatory bodies...

I serious doubt the update will ever come to us now. With Google TV now
being rolled out I don't Sony will be spending any more time on Android TV
updates. I assume this was just an update they were working on during
Google TV was in development and so just rolled it out anyway. Can't see
them starting work on a new Android TV updates for anything from scratch
again now. Shame this doesn't address a Bluetooth switch off issue I have
with my X80C.

Have Sony ever given a reason why they havent released for UK ? I have an 800C here in New Zealand which updated around a year ago and runs great . I cant see why there would be any differences apart from the tuner .

Well, this page exists and references the 2015-2016 ATV1 models (and is UK specific, last updated at the end of March):
https://www.sony.co.uk/electronics/support/articles/00226266

That page can also be found on a number of other EU country's respective Sony support sites too...

...and a German user on this forum was told directly by Sony that it would happen "in the next few weeks" in September of last year:

Decided stupid to raise a Sony Customer Complaint on this subject, mainly because I want the update to improve the UI performance of the TV, as even after factory reset the slowness and stuttering performance of this TV can sometimes make it unusable.

I couldn't get a clear response about model to model updates and equally was frustrated with the instructions being based on Android Oreo (8) system not Android 7 ironically!

Either way this was the response, which was to be expected:

"With reference to your enquiry regarding Sony KDL-43W809C , please note that the software version differ from one region to another. If you check the link we send you before, you will be able to find that this link is available for the European devices. Also please be advised that this model KDL-43W809C is only available in Europe and its is not mandatory to have same software version on all the TV under the same series."

Which in short is called, washing your hands of Europe.
