Vaio (VPCEB3M1E) keyboard acting strange

Hello all,

My ~4 months old VAIO's (VPCEB3M1E, Win 7 64bit) keyboard has been acting strange for the last 1.5 days ... and in spite of wasting the whole day online I haven't found anything to solve this yet ... any help, suggestions, similar experiences will be much appreciated!

Symptoms:

- My numeric and F keys seem to be working exactly the same ... i.e. when i press '1' then I type it, but i also get the support/help option. When I type 3, then I get 3 but also the 'find' option ... pressing 5 gives 5 along with a refresh!!

- my delete and backspace keys work one character at a time ... I cannot delete a whole row by keeping either pressed continuosly ...

- in word or excel, pressing 'p' gives 'p' along with 'Save As' dialog box!

- with Num Lock on, if I press '1' (on the number pad) then I get 21, same if I press 2, with 3 i get ,3 ... the same if I press 'delete' on the number pad ...

- in a word document, 'Ins' (insert) seems to toggle on automatically ...

- when I press 'shift' and ) to get the bracket i also get all options you would with a right click ...

- Alt + Tab doesn't work

- Shift + End/Home doesn't work to select text

What have I tried so far:

- tried to uninstall keyboard from device manager and let Win 7 detect it, problem not fixed

- tried to power off, remove battery and adapter, hold power switch down for 10 seconds to release any charge, and switch back on, problem not resolved

- booted in safe mode, problem persists

- restored system to a few days back (before this started) but problem persists

Can any of you shed some light / help me out with this? This has been a great laptop ... but I am hopelessly frustrated as of now

For the record, I tried the following without any success ...

(1) I did a complete fresh install of Win7 on C:, with the problem persisting

(2) I used F10 and a full recovery to factory-state (it even removed the partition etc to get it back to how it was out of the box) ... but the problem persists. This was what was suggested by Sony customer care ... I have written back to them ...

Has anybody diagnosed this issue accurately, with maybe a solution?

As you seem to have eliminated a software issue it looks increasingly like a hardware/wiring problem which will probably need a repair.

I would contact Vaio Support for a way forward.

Just to add closure to this thread ... the Vaio visited the service center ... and got a new motherboard to solve the problem ... the folks at the service center claimed that this was not a common problem with this model ... no clue what caused it though ...

Hi j4jahangir,

Presumably your Vaio is no longer covered by warranty?

Your Vaio will probably need inspecting as this is usually a hardware problem. Are you in the UK?

Yes you are right.. It did not come into warranty now nor I am in UK..

Please suggest ...

Hi, Don't know if any help but back in May this year, my Model VPCF11S1E laptop keyboard had a couple of 'sticky' keys. One of the keys, after easing and getting some functionality, then became lose and it was not easy to put back. I went online and entered Model of laptop and located a replacement keyboard on Amazon! I have to admit that I was a bit 'anxious' at taking apart my laptop, however, having found appropriate instructions online, proceeded to remove the old one and replace with the new one. Basically, it turned out to be quite straightforward and I would have no problem doing that again! Everything now working as though new!
