When I first bought my PCV-RZ504 back in March I had problems sounding similar to yours. I returned it and was told there was nothing wrong with it and that I should reinstall Windows. The same problems kept on so I returned it again, whereupon the repair team found that the P4 chip was broken in some way. It took them around five weeks to find a replacement, but I've been very happy with it since [so far, fingers crossed]...

If your hardware is knackered then no amount of recovering will make any difference. If it's a virus then recovery should sort you out - make sure you have AV software installed and updated before you go on-line afterwards though.

If you've changed your graphics card from the one that came with the machine then you are a bit buggered, to use a technical term, as far as recovery is concerned 'cos the drivers on your recovery disk won't be of much use to the graphics card.

Perhaps someone competent could help a bit more - or maybe chuck this one in the bin and start again :smileysmug:

Hey! The Sasser Worm Infection exploits the System Restore Feature on your PC, so the answer to question... NO System restore may not work.

Try this;

Enable Windows XP Firewall - Right click my computer, properties, advanced, under startup & recovery click settings & then UNCHECK the Automatic restart option.

Top Tip: Auto restart is a usuful feature that restarts your PC if a major, or serious error occurs on Windows (could well be the Sasser Worm).

Good Luck Anyhow.

At least you've managed to rule out quite a few things that it wasn't - it can be infuriating to have a problem and not know the cause

yeah it can indeed

i also think that i restart was caused by my hardware/ lacie harddrive ...... as earlier my computer just switch all knowledge of the harddrive off for no reason then it poped back on showing a little ! in the disk managment

i then restarted my computer and got a msg appear which i have never seen before saying sorry windows wasnt able to start this may have been caused by new hardware or removal of hard ware

then went on to explain that my system could have restarted so and so eventually asking me to click pevious settings....

which i did and am now sending my lacie back
but i looked inside my vaio and since i have never put in a new hard drive am a bit confused

can i do it

the only sort of slots i can see are these large long thing ones a little like card slots but bigger .....????????
