Sony Viao to TV

I have just bought a Samsung TV and was advised I would be able to conect my Sony Viao laptop to it via a HDMI cable. The laptop only has a VGA out put and the TV HDMI input, what can I do? Would appreciate some advice, apparently the convertion cables don't work !?)

Hi cahambl48 and welcome.

Because the signal types are completely different, conversion cables will not work.

You will need a VGA to HDMI converter box - something like this one: -

Hi, me again.....could you settle an argument? The cable - VGA to HDMI - that you can buy for a £2 or £3, (not the converter), would you get a picture but it would just be a lo quality (analgue?)? or would there be no picture at all? The main reason for connecting the laptop would be to watch streaming football.
