Opening a GRZ615(S)

Hi ppl,

am needing to clean the dust out of my laptop I think - but can't find a step-by-step guide to doing it.

Anybody know how? Which screws to undo and all that malarky?

Oh - and while I'm at it - anybody know how to get the CMOS settings up? Thought it was to keep F1 down whilst booting, but apparently not........ ;(

Hi Duncan

Taking apart any laptop is not for the faint-hearted - the screws are tiny and if you lose any you're pretty much buggered - I've never seen anywhere that advertises individual screws for Sony laptops - but then maybe Sony used generic sized screws for your laptop

Rather than take the thing apart completely, why not try to suck some of the dust out with a (decent) vacuum cleaner.

As a matter of interest, why do you think you need to clean the dust out, are you overheating?

I must agree with tellingd: taking apart a laptop is very fiddly and things go wrong easily. If you really want to open it have a look at http://www.myplc.com/sony/service_manual.htm. I couldn't see your model, but maybe it gives you a clue.

Hi guys,

yes, do seem to be having a problem with overheating - got a 'lump' of dust out of it earlier and have tried vacuuming it.

Just appears that the fan is on 'high' nearly all the time.

Am quite 'happy' taking machines apart - although more used to taking big servers apart, rather than a laptop though.....

I know 'tecky blokes' who are more than happy to rip apart servers all day long but have come close to a nervous breakdown with a laptop - someone else on this forum recommended that you have a jewellers kit handy (precision screwdrivers, magnifying glass etc) handy if you really want to have a go.

Have to agree with Dave, be careful taking it apart and do keep notes on where what goes. I know techies that hate opening laptops and I have to agree withem whole heartly.
