DVD not working on TR1MP

TR1MP running XP Pro(Build 2600.xpsp1.02.0828-1920). My CD/DVD combo has stopped playing or recognising DVDs. This device (Matshita UJDA745) to be recognised in Control Panel>System>Hardware and is currently set to DVD Region 2 (correct for my UK location). Even if I wished to restore from the recovery disks (which I'm not keen on as I would then have a year's worth of applications/data to restore), I am unable to do so as the drive doesn't recognise the recovery DVD !! The CD/RW part is working perfectly and I am able to read and burn CDs with no problem. I have tried updating the driver for the UJDA745 but to no avail. Any ideas guys ??? I'm rapidly losing the will to live. The TR5 looks tempting ..... but I'd much rather get this DVD working. Regards.

OK on bootup press F8 just before the XP logo and boot into safe mode.
Uninstall the DVD drive by going to System > Hardware > Device Manager and right click on the device > uninstall.

Reboot and let us know if it works?
