Laptop Hard Disk Replacement and Boot Problem

Hey

My hard disk drive failed (20GB on a FX405) and i managed to replace it myself with a brand new (80GB) model. The recovery disks did partition the new drive OK and installed all the old software on it seemingly OK. On restart though, it will not boot up at all. I have performed a system recovery twice with the same result.

Is this simply because it was not the original HDD that the software is registered for?
Or is there a BIOS issue with using a much larger drive?
Should the new drive have been formatted before trying a system recovery? I thought that the recovery formatted the drive anyway.

The error reads

"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: System32\Drivers\Fastfat.sys"

If i use a windows 98 startup floppy i can access the new drive and even copy to it but windows proper will not boot up.

Surely all the files that were needed would have been copied accross when the system restore happens.

Guess i will be phoning vaio link.
