Hello - I am wondering if any "VAIO-masters" or anyone else for that matter can offer me some advice on two things about my PCG FR415B. Firstly, what are the strengths (and weaknesses) of the FR series. Secondly, for the 12 weeks I have actually had a VAIO, it has been in the repair shop for 8. This is disappointing and extremely annoying. What are my rights here? The problem was first the CD drive arrived defective and had to be replaced, and an ongoing problem is this strange beep sound every time I minimise/maximise windows. They say they cant recreate the problemand it fits within specifications etc. I have placed it next to other VAIOs and other brands' models and have never heard a noise like this. They just seem to be waiting for me to give in and say that I'll have it back. I dont know what to do or what I am entitled to do, but I know that I dont want a brand new computer that has defects from the start. All I know is that I bought sony to avoid these issues, and thus far I dont feel that I have received anything like value for money. How to proceed in the face of the corporate world?? (A final point - is the fan meant to be so incessantly loud?) Thanks for any help fellas/fellesses

Well thats definately not good - 8 out of 12 weeks in a repair centre? I would be complaining and threatening them with trading standards.

Ah i know what the beep problem is. It's more of a sort of quiet metallic zing isn't it. I think it's that unusual, my computer does that and I'm ok with it, I don't think it's work sending off for repair. It's more of a quirk than a fault. I read elsewhere on this forum it was caused by dirty coils or something I didnt pay much attention. Kee-Lo might enlighten you, he was the one explaining I think.
Fans often are louder these days because the faster processors produce so much heat, and on the laptops especially because fan is on the base not the side.
Keeping your computer for 8 weeks because of a beep (which im very surprised they have never heard of) and a broken CD drive is ridiculous. If you are asking to have it replaced with the same model, and they are insisting there's nothing wrong with it they shouldn't be dragging their heels so much. Sad to say with some companies you have to make a noise before you get the service.

It's barely audible usually.

As for fans, I'd be worried if they didn't work.

thanks alot tyger! They are supposed to get back to me soon, but the definition of "soon" is entirely open i suppose. But at least now I can say what the cause is next time I speak to them (surely it should be the other way round???)
