How to upgrade Vaio Hard Disk

Hi,

I want to upgrade the HDD of my Vaio GRV516G (30GB).

Are there any BIOS limits regarding current HDD-capacities up to 60/80/100 GB?

What is the best way to migrate system and data?
Via connected Desktop PC containing the Backup of Vaio partitions and booting the Vaio with the new and empty HDD from Windows-CD?

I´d like to buy an extern 2,5"-HDD in a usb-box and change the HDD with the current one from my Vaio to use the old HDD as well. Are there any issues to pay attention to, e.g. power supply?

Hi Michael,

The GRV should be fine with a 80GB disk.

As for migration, getting an enclosure is very handy to move it all over to the new disk.

I would not change the Harddisk on your Notebook .
(it's to expensive to buy a new)

Get an USB-harddisk for pictures, movies, music or others
that's cheeper

And you can get more then 80GB (like 160GB)

other idea by an external USB-Harddisk-case
and put a 400GB Harddisk (like HITACHI) into the case.

Thanks, I guess the better idea is to get an external one.
Unfortunately my Vaio has only USB 1.1 . That´s much too slow for hard disk use.

So the solution would be Firewire (GRV516G has S400, which should suffice)
but

I had trouble with LaCiE products and 4pin firewire...

Are there any other FireWire-drives recommendable and affordable?

Do you really discourage from replacing the internal HDD? I mean an external one will consume even more power.
60/80 GB was enough, I don´t need the best and largest of all drives.

Let´s assume I buy an external usb-80GB hdd. Can I just replace it or are there any BIOS-settings necessary. Is the power supply adapter standardized for all 2,5" ?

EzQuest do some nice pre-built firewire drives. I've found that it's just as easy (and cheaper) to buy a no-name firewire hard drive enclosure and a standard desktop drive. Not quite as pretty though.

The main advantage of the enclosure route is that you can change the hard drive anytime you want if you want to use it as a backup drive. You can also use relatively inexpensive high speed desktop DVD writers in the bay as well.

i have mine from lingus which im really happy with it.
But thats an german firm.
I think you should by not such a small case like mine is cause the Temperature can get high in such one.

Theres also an 1.6 TB
so even more space for porn:smileygrin:

For 2 years ago I have payed for my Notebook 1599¿

and I have,

no Pentium M:smileycry:
no Double Layer DVD Writer:smileycry:
must payed for PCMCIA WLAN card:smileycry:
have graphicscard with shared-memory:smileycry:
have 60 GB harddisk with only 4200Rpm
have real 480MB Ram thanks shared memory:smileycry:

but I love Notebook.

To sum up:
- I learned: HDD upgrade to 80 GB HDD is trouble-free.
- There are some vondors for Firewire HDDs

Any tips regarding power supply or backup/restore with exchange of internal disk ?
