I have had my PCG-GR114MK for three years now without any windows software problems. However on restarting today I have received a message saying 'Files required to run windows properly have been replaced by unrecognized versions. to maintain system stability Windows must restore the original version of these files- Please insert your Windows Professional 2000 CD now'

Here is the problem. I cannot remember if this CD existed in the first place. Is a physical CD always supplied or is this information installed in some folder on the C drive?

I have two folders called i386 and WINNT. I have already copied the i386 folder to a CD but that has not worked.

Can anybody help me?

Thanks

loyalprince

My PCG GR114SK (must be about the same age as yours) came with three recovery CDs so I assume that yours should have as well.
I understand that newer models require you to produce the recovery CDs yourself.

There is a chance that one of the system files has been replaced by one of the windows update hotfixes.

You can still run your system by pressing Cancel at the prompt.

This will generate the message:

Windows File Protection
You chose not to restore the original versions of the files. This may effect Windows stability.
Are you sure you want to keep these unrecognized versions?

Yes/No?

Press Yes.

You must run an up to date virus scan and some good spyware software to ensure that you don't have a virus or other nasty.

I think the only other options (If you don't have access to a Win 2000 install disk) are to either recover the system using the supplied recovery disks or try to locate the original versions of the changed files in the cabinet files of the i386 folder.
