DVD-RW drive: can't write to blank DVD-R

OK, maybe this is a dumb question - if so, I apologise!

I just got my PCG-TR5MP back from repair where a new optical drive was put in after the original one refused to recognise DVDs (CDs were OK)

Its a Matshita UJ-812, which I think is what the original was too.

I bought some blank DVD-R discs with the intention of creating a backup & then reformatting/rebuiling my laptop.

BUT, when I put a blank DVD into the drive it shows its all full with 0 bytes remaining free. I tried using drag'n'drop CD+DVD and it says the DVD is full.

The specifications say the DVD-RW drive has "up to 2x DVD-R writing speed" so why won't it let me write to a DVD-R disc?

Any ideas would be gratefully accepted - I thought my problems were over after the 7 weeks it was away for repair - but apparently not

The UJ-812, seems to very picky about which media u use. I've had a spindle of dvd-r's who the drive did not regonize.
Ritek is fine with my drive. Or try to upgrade your atapi drivers, this might also help.
If the problem persists there is no option then to contact sony again.
