Hey lads, had a scary moment there during the week when I virtually threw my A217m against a wall... not deliberately, obviously. I had put it into its carry case, leaning against a wall, but I forgot to zip it shut. Then, I was in a rush out of the room so I grabbed the case by the handle and lifted it very quickly.... Result: laptop flips out of case in the direction of the stone wall, at a very high speed.. I literally stood there for a minute in shock at what I had done.

There wasn't any obvious physical damage, like scratches or dents, but the dvd-drive was hanging out, not very reassuring. I tried to turn it on a few times. Each time the bluetooth and wifi lights would come on, and it'd make the booting-up whirring noise, but then it would die with a click. I was really shi**ing it at this stage. I have about a dozen important college projects on it, but hadn't backed up in about a week.. eep! So I tried removing the battery and putting it back in, and trying to turn it on plugged in or just with the battery. Nothing. Then I happened to turn it over just as I pressed the power button and Joy! the familiar "tadada" could be heard. I flipped it back over, and there was the welcome screen, then it came out of hibernation, and incredibly everything was ok. Paranoid, I checked everything to see what was broken; the DVD drive, the bluetooth, the wireless, the keyboard, anything at all. All fine! Quel chance!

A few days later and everythings still ok. I can't believe it, the thing deserved to be in bits the way it got treated, but I suppose its a testimony to Sony's build quality and design. Thank you Sony! There'd be no degree for me if I'd lost all that data!

A similar thing happened to my previous Vaio. Jumping up from the armchair I accidentally almost threw the notebook onto the hearth. Calamity! Although the case was slightly damaged it whirred into life as though it was just another day in the life of a Vaio, and continued until replacing a couple of months ago with my present Vaio.
In fact my husband still uses the older machine for photoes and DVDs.
Sony must make them strong, no PC should have survived this bad treatment.

In fairness yeah Sonys are very tough. I only had to fart sideways with my old Toshiba Satellite and the thing bluescreened. There was a particular area near the power button that if you tapped it with your nail (didn't even have to be very hard) then it would bluescreen and reboot. Et voilá. Half an hour of work gone. There musta been some sadisitic engineers in Toshiba putting a "death button" just in that area...

But no more hassle with my lovely Vaio!

Clie are still popular at work, many people still ask for them. Its a pity I can no longer fetch one for someone from the stores.

I know of a guy who very stupidly perched his VAIO on the railings of the university staircase. It was on floor 5 which is 10 flights of stairs up, and the PC was on at the time. Someone bumped into him, and of course it fell, a long way down.

Well after this guy flew down the stairs, a horrible bang sound was heard as the laptop hit the ground - it bounced a little lol.

His entire university year was on that hard disk (not backed up of course). The laptop as well, er, fine, bizarrely enough. Lol the PC had gone into hibernate before hitting the ground, so the hard disks heads were parked, the screen looked fine, the hinges showed signs of a hairline fracture, the DVD drive was hanging out and there was a nasty battlescar on the paintwork, quite small but visible on the base of the laptop. It fell sort of screen/base end first on the ground, the weight of it would od that I guess.

Well he went to switch it on, and nothing. He gingerly pushed in the DVD drive, it did sit properly after a while. the screen remained dead. He removed the battery, replaced the battery a few times, and finally after he left the PC for about a minute or so, it did start, Windows resumed from hibernate, and the system did work properly.

That fall would have wiped out any laptop by rights, but his was strangely unaffected! Needless to say he will never use it on top of a railing again. Lol he was unbelievably stupid doing that. After he got it back to his flat and tested it he told me what happened and said it worked 100% fine and did do so until he sold it.
