Can someone tell me why it SONY hcd-sbt 100 shuts off after 30mins or so?

maybe the Sleep Timer is stuck for some reason (meaning it sets itself to 30 minutes every time you switch the system on) - have you tried to put it on "off"?

Also if you don't play any audio, the system will switch itself off.

If that both is not the case try to reset the unitby unplugging it from power until the power-indicator is not lit anymore and then plugging it back in while also pressing "Stop" and "On/Off" on the remote until the display shows "RESET".
