Now realize that I had completly misunderstood subtiles! SORRY!

I thought that to record with subtiles you had to set the default to Basic subtitles. The reason was that I was only aware of the Action menu as a means to switch subtitles on or off. And the Action menu for recordings did not have subtiles as a option.

Later I discovered the remote's subtitles button. Unlike the Acton menu it works with recordings to toggle subtitles on/off. Thus default settings should not be Basic but Off! SORRY!0

Would like our recordings to have subtitles (with the possibility to switch off). But would like live TV to be without subtitles, without having to keeping switching them off with the action menu every time you change channel.

What model of Sony TV do you have.

What do you mean by the Action menu.

If subtitles are not set to display for live TV when you switch channels they should remain off.

Settings> Channels & Input> Preferences> Subtile settings> Broadcast> Subtitle (Off/ Basic or Hard of hearing)

The above path is for my Sony TV, yours may be slightly different depending on model.

Pressing the subtitle button on the remote control should turn them on.

I take it you are using the TV to record programmes using an attached HDD.

If so pressing the subtitle button on the remote will either switch on or off the subtitles on your recordings.

If you are using another device to record programmes subtitles will be controlled via that devices own remote control.

The standard Sony symbol for the subtitles key is a white box with four dots at the bottom,

this is available on most if not all Sony remote controls.

Good you have found it now.

If you have set subtitles to Off under your Action menu settings, this is now your default for the TV press the subtitle button to activate/ deactivate the subtitles.

This should work for both live TV and recordings you have made to your USB stick.

(I can certainly switch subtitles on or off on recordings I have made via attached HDD using the subtitles button,

my /TV is different and younger than yours so not sure if this was a feature added later, you will need to try it out.)

If you have set subtitles to Basic or Hard of hearing under the Action menu you can turn the subtitles off or back on again using the subtitle button on the remote control.

.

@khallergard

I see that @daveyh64 has largely sorted you out. It’s not that subtitles can’t be done; as you have perhaps now found, if a programme has subtitles and you record it, the subtitles are recorded as well, whether you have them turned on or not.

So what you wanted comes down to saying “If watching a recorded programme, then by default show subtitles; if watching a live programme then by default don’t show them”. Which would be a nifty bit of automation if it could be done, but is a fairly unusual request.

Hopefully though, now you have found the subtitles toggle on the remote, turning them on and off for yourself according to what you are watching will be so straightforward that you don’t, after all, need that last little bit of automation to do what you feared would be much more cumbersome manually.

Having set Basic as default, I can only toggle off with the button or the Action menu. Off is not remembered when changing channel or going back to a channel previosly turned off.

I was glad to find that I can turn the subtitles off on recordings

@royabrown2 thanks, very good summary of my issue
